Where to stay around the crossing
There is no village at either end of this line. If you want the 05:45, or you missed the last one, the nearest bed is a drive away on one side or the other.

Most pages about this crossing stop at the water. That leaves out the part that costs real money: neither end of the line has anywhere to sleep, so the crossing you choose decides which island you spend the night on.
Why this comes up at all
Valbiska is a berth in a wooded inlet. There is a ticket window, a quay and a car park, and no village. Merag is smaller still: a landing, a slipway and a cafe.
Two situations follow from that. If you want an early sailing you have to be near the port the night before, which on Krk means Malinska or Krk town. And if the queue beats you to the last departure, you are driving back inland to find a room at an hour when that is least convenient.
On the Krk side
Malinska and Krk town are both about 20 min from Valbiska, 16 km one way and 13 km the other. Krk town has the wider choice. Both put you within half an hour of the marshalling lanes for a 05:45 start.
Coming down the motorway, Rijeka is the practical stop if you arrive late in the evening and want to cross in daylight.
On the Cres side
Cres town is just under 15 km from Merag and is the first place on the island with a real choice of accommodation. Reaching it takes roughly 22 min on the island road.
If you are heading for Lošinj, remember the swing bridge at Osor sits between you and Mali Lošinj, and it opens for boats at 09:00 and 17:00. Arriving on the wrong side of that adds 20 to 30 min. The page on the Osor bridge works through the timing.
Planning the night around the ferry
The pattern that causes trouble is a long drive followed by an evening crossing. Between 18:15 and 23:59 there are only three departures from Valbiska in low season, and the queue does not thin out just because the timetable does.
Sleeping on the Krk side and crossing in the morning is the calmer version of the same journey. It also costs nothing extra, because the fare is the same at every hour.
